Poultice
- Preparation method
- 2 steps
A poultice is a mixture of fresh, dried, or powdered herbs that is applied to an affected area. Poultices are used to ease nerve or muscle pains, sprains, or broken bones, and to draw pus from infected wounds, ulcers, or boils.
Quantity
Sufficient herb to cover the affected area.
Steps
- Simmer the herb for 2 minutes. Squeeze out any excess liquid, rub some oil on the affected area to prevent sticking, and apply the herb while hot.
- Bandage the herb securely in place using gauze or cotton strips. Leave on for up to 3 hours, as required.
Traditional amounts
Traditional texts describe the preparations below, and where those texts give specific amounts, the amounts are quoted here as part of that record. This is a record of historical practice, not a dosage recommendation - the figures are what the sources say, not what HerbMate tells you to take. Amounts, potency, and safe use vary enormously by preparation, plant part, and person.
Apply a new poultice every 2-3 hours. Repeat as often as required.
